tractive unit / trailer
Explanation:
"Triebfahrwerk" is also more commonly referred to as a locomotive, but since they come and all sizes and locomotives tend to be the larger version, attractive unit may be a better general translation (see Routledge, German Technical Dictionary).
"Fahrwerk" usually is translated as a vehicle, but that can be motorized or not. "Trailer" (which is the translation that's not pledge gives for "Laufgestell") may serve better in this instance, since you are talking about a non-motorized carriage.
"carriage" may in fact be a better translation than a trailer, since nowadays carriages are sometimes placed in front of the locomotive and are "pushed". If that might be the case senior context, then "tractive unit" also comes into question as a correct translation. The only way I can see all the avoiding this problem is to translate it as a "drive unit".

caboose

Explanation:
This is the US name for the motorized unit of a [freight] train. Usually one is pulling, and the other pushing, generally bright yellow painted. Of course, a full-size locomotive is still just that, but I believe they are only used for very long distance traffic

b. The motor bogie SF30-TF for low floor tramcars is used to achieve a floor height of 320 (360) mm above top of rail, throughout the car without the need for any steps within the vehicles.
The bogie is equipped with completely suspended traction drive units with separately ventilated three-phase asynchronous motors in which the wheels, arranged in line, are speed-coupled by means of the motor gearing unit. This design gives the bogie excellent axle
