German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Engineering (general)
German term or phrase: kraftschlüssig
An den Führungsschienen der Vertikalschlitten in der Messstation 1 und Messstation 2 sind insgesamt 6 nebenan im Prinzip dargestellten Bremsen kraftschlüssig eingebaut.

A total of 6 brakes, in principle adjacent to each other, are installed (how?) in the guide rails of the vertical slides in measuring station 1 and measuring station 2.

My Antriebstechnik dickie give the ff translation:

non-positive/tensionally/frictionally/force-locking/friction-locked/adhesive

or

press-fit/with an interference fit (bei Rad-Schiene-System)

perhaps "6 brakes are friction-locked on..."

English translation:[positively/firmly] friction-locked in place
Explanation:
(or edit to best fit your context.)

I haven’t come across this term before – hence the many look-ups below. The dictionary entries I found are open to more than one interpretation, for instance: (1) to provide direct frictional contact (with); (b) friction-locked in place

I initially leaned toward the former meaning (because of the brake connection) until I plugged ***kraftschlüssig eingebaut*** into Google (see below). The resulting few URLs lead me to conclude that, at least in these contexts, this phrase means friction-locked in place (to provide a very solid mount; see Siemens below).

Kraftschluß: adhesion
kraftschlüssig befestigt: shrunk (adj.) mounted with an interference fit, friction-locked
~ werden to become solid
Siemens: FWB Energie und Autmatisierungstechnik

kraftschlüssige Verbindung: positive connection/joint
(Schmitt, FWB der KFZS-Technik3 12 517820 7)

Kraftschluß: frictional connection
Kraftschluß zur Straße: road grip
Kraftschlußausnutzung: adhesion utilization (tire); braking/brake effectiveness
Kraftschlußbeanspruchung: frictional connection requirements
kraftschlüssige (haftschlüssige) verbindung frictional connection
(Junge-Lukhaupt: Krafttfahrzeugtechnik, ISBN 0 89573 988 1)

Kraftschluß: adhesion, adherence, grip
kraftschlüssig: adherent
kraftschlüssiger Gangwechsel/Schaltvorgang: powershift, power shift

non--positive

Explanation:
All of my major technical dictionaries state "non-positive" as the primary translation of 'kraftschlüssig' in mechanical contexts.

"...have been integrated/incorporated in a non-positive manner/fashion ..."

Explanation:
I agree with Tom here for 'kraftschlüssig' - which seems to be used in a number of somewhat incompatable ways in German.

BTW, have another look at 'nebenan im Prinzip dargestellt' -- the author could be using 'Prinzip' as short for 'Prinzipschema', which would make this mean 'as shown alongside (or 'at the side') in the principal/main drawing' -- which seems to make more (mechanical) sense than 'in principle next to each other'.

friction fit

Explanation:
a bearing manufacturer I work for uses friction fit for "kraftschlüssig"

How about:

A total of 6 brakes are mounted with a friction fit in the guide rails of the vertical slide/carriage in gauging/measuring stations 1 and 2.

I also agree with Ken's comments on "nebenan." Is there a diagram next to the text? That's what it puts me in mind of. In that case, the brakes are shown in a figure/schematic/diagram to the right or left.
