see below Explanation: Treppenwange = string = stringer = stringboard = stringpiece (maybe archaic) = The diagonal timber into which the steps and risers of a staircase are set. This is supported by NODE, Webster and Ernst. - Ernst also gives "notch board" or "notch-board" which also seems quite logical. - This site confirms "string", "stringer" and "stringboard" for Canada: http://www.its-canada.com/reed/glossary/gloss-1.htm#s - This strange but important sounding California site also shows "stair carriage" but at the same time "string", "stringer" and "stringboard" with more or less the same definitions. ???????? http://www.contractorslicense.com/150glossary.htm - Stringboard is perhaps a little unfortunate because of the music connection. Cannot find any British sites, we'll have to rely on NODE. |

See below Explanation: According to my Civil Eng. Dictionary, Treppenwange can be called a bridgeboard, horse, string, stringer or stringboard, which I looked up again in Walker's Builders Reference Book: Stairwork: Framing and erecting wood stairs of unassembled stock material: When framing and erecting ordinary wood stairs with closed bridgeboard (stringers: where the treads and risers are not housed out) it will require 3 to 4 hrs. carpenter time to lay out the work, cut out the treads and risers and place wood stringers for a flight of ordinary wood stairs up to 1.2m wide and 3.3m story height. After the wood stringers are in place, it will require 4 hrs. carpenter time to place treads and risers for each flighter of stairs (providing it is a plain box stair w/o nosings to form and w/o newels, balusters or handrail). Def. of bridgeboard - The string or carriage of stairs. Even though this deals with wood stair, I imagine that the terminology would still be the same. |
