German term or phrase: passive Formänderungsarbeit
This is just the title of a section in a technical reference:
"Prinzip der passiven Formänderungsarbeit --
Anwendung des Prinzips der passiven Formänderungsarbeit bei der Berechnung von Verformungen (Durchbiegungen, Verdrehungen) an statisch bestimmt gelagerten Systemen und bei der Berechnung der Lagerreaktionen bei äußerlich statisch unbestimmten Systemen sowie von Schnittgrößen bei innerlich statisch unbestimmt aufgebauten Systemen."

I know Formänderungsarbeit means deformation work, but I can't find it in combination with passive. Does anyone know what this is referring to and what term is used?
Any help much appreciated.

passive deformation work
Explanation:
Hello,

I have not found any references either, but the matter is maybe simple: passive deformation work - meaning due to an outside force, active - from within due to some material change for example. I think there is no other but this general explanation possible. Even in the relevant university scripts they never mention it.

That´s just a guess.

Thanks to you both for your help. This explanation made the most sense to me, but I also thank Tom, especially for all the references.

Variable Data Influence
The first type of inhomogeneity varies the importance attached to information content in the domain of the image pair when computing the transformation required at each point in the source. In terms of a Bayesian approach [2], where the deformation is determined by the solution of a weighted sum of likelihoods and priors, the weight assigned to the likelihood is varied according to assumptions about the relevance of the data in different regions of the image. In terms of regularisation, where the equation solved is a weighted sum of driving forces and constraints on the deformation, the influence of the driving force is weakened or strengthened relative to the deformation constraints.
By ignoring the contribution of the driving force, we can force a region to be passive, whose deformation is due solely to its proximity to active regions.

Control of Passive Dynamics
K. Yamazaki, M. Ahmadi, M. Buehler
Design for passive dynamics appears to be necessary on the path towards energy efficient practical legged robots. However, robots with proper passive dynamics are either unstable or if there is a stable limit cycle, its domain of attraction is typically small. Interpreting locomotion as a periodically forced limit cycle oscillation of a highly nonlinear dynamical system, control forcing functions are developed which stabilize the limit cycle over a large region of phase space, consume minimal energy, and provide strong robustness to modeling errors, noise and external disturbances. In addition, we develop controllers for negotiating obstacles while running in the passive dynamic regime. In the absence of accurate models of contact, material deformation, noise and actuator dynamics, physical experimentation is mandatory. Based on encouraging simulation results we are implementing our passive dynamic design and control ideas on the ARL Monopod II.

Passive deformation of the brachialis muscle under stretching has thus been simulated using the complex constitutive model previously described. For this purpose, the reconstructed muscle provided by UG has been discretized into a mesh of 4050 hybrid 4-node tetrahedra with a total of 1029 nodes.
