Die elektrische Verbindung der Leitungen im Flachkabel mit dem Gerät wird über Kontaktschwerter oder Kontaktstifte hergestellt, die von außen durch den Kabelmantel hindurch in die Kupferleiter gestoßen werden.
This sentence appears in an electronic system manual and refers to the connection of cables.

English translation:blades or pins
Explanation:
What they are talking about is the individual contacts that penetrate the insulation of a flat cable to make contact with the conductors. There are two types: flat, forked contacts that slice through the insulation and trap the conductor, and pins that penetrate both the insulation and the wire. I doubt that there are specific equivalents for the German terms in English.
I would use "blade" for Kontaktschwert and "pin" for Kontaktstift. A stud (with all due respect to Ernst) is usually blunt and would not easily penetrate insulation.
You can avoid inventing an English term where (possibly) none exists by translating this along the lines of "the electrical contacts between the flat cable and the device are made either by small blades or pins that penetrate the insulation..."
