horizontal / vertical carousel Explanation: This is a tough call and fairly complex, because a standard term might just confuse the eventual user. I would base my translation on a picture. See the one at whitesystems.com for an idea. Horizontal and vertical carousels seem to be referred to as just plain "carousels" - or as Werner points out "rotating shelves" - though I think it will vary tremendously within industries. If Tom's customer is selling to many industries, then it seems to me like carousel is slightly ahead - as it more generally refers to the whole unit of "moveable items in easily accessible storage." Some German reference works seem to also like "rack." Manfred Hessenberger (former Mercedes-Benz Logistics/Purchasing manager/global) says "recirculation rack" in his Fachwörterbuch Losgistik published by Verlag Vahlen - whereas Vanessa Scot-Sabic's Springer Dictionary of Logistics says: Umlaufregal: carousel [Lager] Umlauflager: rotary rack The Gabler Logistics Lexicon defines "Umlaufregallager" in German: The storage item and its bin/tote move together as one unit, either horizontally (Karussellregal) or vertically (Schrankpaternoster, Schlangenpaternoster); small items are stored in the Schrankpaternoster, long items in the Schlangenpaternoster. The maximum total stock load may not exceed 20 metric tons. The maximum total stock load in any one gondola may not exceed 1 metric ton. The number of gondolas is dependent on the desired gondola size and stock load as well as the ceiling height." = "Langgutpaternoster Typ LP Der Langgutpaternoster ist ein Umlaufregal mit entsprechenden Langgutgondeln, die in eine Förderkette eingebunden sind. Die maximale Gesamtlast der zu lagernden Stäbe soll 20 t nicht überschreiten. Die Belastung pro Gondel beträgt max. 1 t. Die Anzahl der Gondeln hängt von der Gondelgröße sowie von der Raumhöhe ab." I have also researched this terminology often over the years I have been working for them. The site is presently a little behind the current status of my research. We have decided to remove the word "rotating" (because it is redundant when the word "carousel" is used, I only used it in the early years because I was not confident enough that "carousel" was so widely known) with the next revision of their site and to change the word "gondolas" to "carriers". These changes were made for the company's brochures before the Hanover Fair. The term "carousel" does now appear to be very commonly used. If one runs a Google (English – .com) search for +Vertical +Horizontal +Carousel +Rotating +Storage, you get 172 hits which is a lot for so many parameters: http://www.google.de/search?as_qt=w&as_q=Vertical Horizontal... You will see that they are nearly all pertinent. Michael as absolutely right with the term "revolving shelf or shelves", but this term seems to be more often used for storage objects that are light in weight or small in size. For more weighty objects like steel, pallets, etc, the term "rack" usually shows up somewhere in the description. If your customer, like mine, is involved with heavy stuff like pipe, beams, etc, the terms: "Horizontal carousel (storage) rack" or "Vertical carousel (storage) rack" might possibly be best. 2nd thought Explanation: The material managements portal APICS.ORG uses "carousel" as a distinguishing category or sub-type for picking systems. (see first reference) This is a cross-industry body which has produced a dictionary on general materials management terms. E.g.: "rack","A storage device for handling material in pallets. A rack usually provides storage for pallets arranged in vertical sections with one or more pallets to a tier. Some racks accommodate more than one-pallet-deep storage." OR "automated storage/retrieval system (AS/RS)","A highdensity rack inventory storage system with vehicles automatically loading and unloading the racks." Granted, "carousel" is not listed per se. Yet, as a specialist term in this context - it is an acceptable term in industry for what an Umlagerregal does. See: 2nd reference Husky will be showing some new narrow aisle racking for storage of machine parts and lean lifts (vertical carousel) for storage and retrieval of small items.
