German term or phrase: Abschattung
Back to my text on light sensor systems. If the transmitter beam of cascade 1 interferes with the receiver of cascade 2 due to their close proximity, "Abschattung" between the two cascade systems is recommended to solve this problem.
Julie
English translation:shielding
Explanation:
Whether in your dentist's office or around an accelerator or reactor, or as in the URL below, in an airplane, protecting from radiation is called shielding. The material used to protect is also called shielding, e.g. lead shielding. The problem was beam interference; the solution is shielding.

Explanation:
I think you got it already with beam interference. Below is a nice URL that explains the effect.

shading; vignetting

Explanation:
These 2 terms from Richter, Fachwörterbuch Optik, Foto, Video. Ernst gives "corner cutting" in the context of TV.

The installation guide for my motion detector lights uses the term "masking" in the troubleshooting section:
Tape off an area of the lense which is not needed for needss to be masked...

Maybe that'll help. Sure looks like you're having a lot of trouble with this text...

'shading' or 'screening off'

Explanation:
Eurodichautom gives 'shading' or 'shading effects'. The text could thus read 'the two cascades should be screened off' or '....... seperated by a screening'
