German term or phrase: kreditmaterielle Prüfung
The full context is venture capital. The phrase itself appears in an article about a company that was asked to participate in the due diligence testing of certain other companies that were up for sale. In this particular instance, the company asked to participate is listing what a typical day at its offices entails: "Neben den täglichen Aufgaben wie Kreditrisikomanagement, Portfoliosteuerung, und kreditmaterielle Prüfung, XY wurde in die Prüfung von zum Verkauf stehenden Institutionen eingebunden."

verifying loan repayment capacity

Not my field, but this seems to fit the context. Sources:
Zahn (Bank und Börsenwesen): materielle Kreditwürdigkeit=loan repayment capacity; borrower's financial ability to repay a loan. --- Prüfung (Kontrolle)= examination, check, verification
(This strikes me as a financial or law question rather than Tech/Engineering.)

material [or] substantive credit check

"material" or "substantive" in both
legal and business English stands for
"concrete", i.e. in this case an actual credit check.
