English translation:log POW
Explanation:
Log Pow: A product's ability to bioaccumulate through the food chain is measured by its BCF (BioConcentration Factor). However, this is time consuming and expensive to measure. It is recognized that a simple physiochemical property can be used to indicate a product's potential to bioaccumulate. This property is the Log Pow - defined as the ratio of the equilibrium concentration of a dissolved substance in a two-phase system comprising two largely immiscible solvents, n-octanol and water. This methodology has since been replaced largely by High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) which is much quicker (a few minutes) method of generating the Log Pow.

It is generally accepted that a product with a Log Pow greater than 3 has a moderate potential to bioaccumulate and a value of 4-7 indicates a very high potential to bioaccumulate. However, some products that have a high Log Pow may be metabolized quickly in reality and so do not actually bioaccumulate. Others, such as long chain alkanes are rapidly metabolized into natural body compounds (fatty acids) and become incorporated into other natural compounds (triglycerides). Although these are utilized and may be stored in the body, they are not regarded as having been bioaccumulated.

Explanation:
According to the following site of the Eu: http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/lif/dat/1998/en_398L0073.htm... this should be the same in English. "For other relationships see reference 2.
If the partition coefficient (Pow) is not known, an estimate can be made (3) from a knowledge of the aqueous solubility (s) of the substance using:
log10(Pow) = 0.862 log10(s) + 0.710 (r2 = 0.994)(equation 2)"
