Mit dem Begriff Z-Stellung bzw. "z-stellen" wird bei der Deutschen Bahn und ihren Vorgängerunternehmen die Abstellung momentan nicht benötigter Eisenbahnfahrzeuge bezeichnet. Gilt ein Fahrzeug als "z-gestellt", kann das zwei Dinge bedeuten:
"zurückgestellt von der Ausbesserung": Das bedeutet, dass das abgestellte Fahrzeug vorerst keine Instandhaltungsarbeiten oder Hauptuntersuchungen erhält. Andererseits darf es aber nicht ausgeschlachtet oder absichtlich technisch fahruntüchtig gemacht werden. Es muss ggf. innerhalb kürzester Zeit wieder einsatzbereit gemacht werden können.
"zurückgestellt zur Ausmusterung": Fahrzeuge, die mit diesem Titel z-gestellt werden, sind so gut wie verschrottet. Hier dürfen alle Teile entnommen werden, außerdem landen diese Fahrzeuge meistens auf verlassenen Abstellgleisen, die nur noch eine zeitliche Brücke darstellen, bevor die Überführung auf den Schrottplatz stattfindet.
