Die einfache Unternehmens-Homepage, die die wichtigsten Informationen über das Unternehmen gibt und die Dienstleistungs- bzw. Produktpalette beschreibt, ist demnach eine E-Commerce-Anwendung, denn sie bereitet den Weg für die spätere Transaktion. Die natürlich häufigste Form ist der E-Shop: Hier werden die Transaktionen direkt im Internet abgewickelt, es handelt sich hierbei um eine E-Commerce-Anwendung in Reinform. Eine E-Commerce-Anwendung an sich ist jedoch nicht ausreichend, um im Wettbewerb des Internets zu bestehen.
