Auf Grund der hexagonalen Gitterstruktur des Magnesiums kommt es zu geometrischen Fehlanpassungen mit der Struktur der natürlich gebildeten Passivschicht. In der Passivschicht entstehen hohe Druckspannungen, die zu Rissen führen. Korrosiv einwirkende Stoffe haben damit die Möglichkeit, bis zum Metall vorzudringen und Korrosion zu verursachen. Die Passivschicht auf Magnesium ist gegen wässrige Elektrolyte wie Säuren, Salze, die ionogene Bestandteile wie Cl-, SO32- , SO42-, NO3-, PO43-, CO32- enthalten, nicht beständig, da sie aufgelöst wird (Ausnahme: F- und CrO42-).
