As Nick predicted, the next sentence in Greek uses the imperfect tense:-
«Κι όλη αυτή την ώρα εγώ περίμεα σαν βλάκας» του έρχεται του Νάσου[the potential boyfriend] να πει. "We were chatting" says Maria [the potentail girfriend]. "And all this time I was/had been waiting like an idiot...."

σωστή παρατήρηση του Νικ...βασικά τα Αγγλικά στερούνται Παρατατικού. Αν διαβασετε απλά παιδικά παραμυθάκια, όπου στα Ελληνικά το ρήμα είναι σε παρατατικό αυτοί το αποδιδουν με αόριστο. Αδυναμία της αγγλικής αλλά και άλλων όπως οι σλαβικές γλώσσες που στερούνται Παρατατικο΄'υ και καταφεύγουν σε άλλα ρηματικά σχήματα για να υποκαταστησουν την ελλειψη αυτη.

Actually, "λέγαμε" is the imperfect (past continuous / progressive), equivalent to "we were having a chat", and you would normally expect something happening next to interrupt that. "We had a chat" would have been "τα είπαμε με τη Νίκη". We would need the next sentence in order to understand exactly why the author chose the imperfect.
