Η μελέτη της σχέσης μεταξύ audience και Μέσων ξεκινά από πολύ παλιά αφού είναι ένα από τα πρώτα ζητήματα που άρχισαν να εξετάζονται στην σφαίρα μελέτης των Μέσων Μαζικής Ενημέρωσης. Τα θεωρητικά υπόβαθρα για την τηλεόραση και τον τηλεθεατή στηρίζονται κυρίως στις μελέτες των παλαιότερων μέσων αρχής γενομένης από τον κινηματογράφο και τον τύπο. Οι θεωρίες μάλιστα που υπάρχουν σήμερα είναι τόσες πολλές ώστε να δημιουργούν debate μεταξύ των ερευνητών σχετικά με τις επιδράσεις των Μέσων στο κοινό αλλά και με το πώς το κοινό αξιοποιεί και μεταχειρίζεται τα Μέσα.
