Hebrew to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Military / Defense / aerial photography
Hebrew term or phrase: מרכזי פענוח זירתי - מרפ"זים
On my own I would translate this as regional interpretation centers, but wondered if anyone is aware of an official English translation for this term.

This is a description of the unit during the Yom Kippur War --

Interpretation was an exception, which, due to its operational nature, was deployed to מרפ"זים and participated more actively in the war.

Thanks!

Photographic Interpretation Centre

Explanation:
There is information online which refers to the RAF's "Photographic Interpretation Unit(s)" shortened to PIU and also reference to the CIA's National Photographic Interpretation Centre, shortened to NPIC.

There's also sporadic information suggesting that the Americans helped the Israelis build some of their first interpretation centres.

My guess would be there is no "offical" term in English and that there is some leeway for the translator to use artistic licence.

(Although a good starting point for me would be to look at the equivalent unit in English speaking countries as above and go from there).

Asker: Thanks. I know it is an interpretation center, and the fact that it is photographic is understood from the general context. My problem is how to fit in the זירתי part of it. I know this refers to different arenas, or areas, and I think it's OK to say regional but would be happy to have an IDF English version of the name if such a thing exists! Thanks!

Asker: Thanks! Do you know that this type of unit in the IDF is a mobile unit? I have not inferred that from the context, but it is a possibility.

Asker: Thanks! My dicitonary gives the meanings: arena, sphere, theater. I am not able to connect any of these to the title of interpretation center and have it sound like something that makes sense to me.
