Hindi term or phrase: Kaun Banega Crorepati
It is a popular gameshow in India. I was just wondering what it meant.
Mary
English translation:Who will become a millionaire
Explanation:
In Hindi, there is no name for the sum equalling a million. There is, however, a name for the sum equalling ten million and that is a crore. A person who has ten million Rupees on him is called a crorepati. Literally the owner of a crore. There is a smaller designation than this in Hindi, and that is 'lakhpati', which means someone who owns a hundred thousand Rupees. A 'lakh' in Hindi is the sum equalling a hundred thousand.
