Italian term
interferenza
Italian to English
Tech/Engineering
Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Context: motorcycle manual
I have an approved translation for the first sentence (see below) but still need a suitable term for the second sentence.
1) On worn engines, the bearing holder may no longer be a tight fit in the crankcase half
The Italian definition of interferenza in this context is:
'nell'accoppiamento forzato di due elementi, maggiorazione dimensionale dell'elemento interno rispetto a quello esterno, nei limiti della tolleranza prescritta' (Garzanti)
In any case, 'interferenza' is a false friend and I don't think it should be translated as 'interference' in either sentence. I thought about 'clearance' but I don't think this matches the definition of 'interferenza' (see above). Any alternative suggestions welcome - thanks in advance!

negative allowance
I found this definition - Allowance: An allowance is an intentional difference between the maximum material limits of mating parts. It is the minimum clearance (positive allowance) or maximum interference (negative allowance) between such parts.
In your case you could use interference or negative allowance.

shrink fit
http://www.ameritherm.com/overview_shrinkfit.html
Shrink fitting is a procedure in which heat is used to produce a very strong joint between two pieces of metal, one of which is inserted into the other. Heating causes one piece of metal to contract or expand on to the other, producing interference and pressure which holds the two pieces together mechanically.
Most applications involve a shaft with a given outside diameter and another part such as a gear, steering knuckle or washer which has a bore hole. There are several forms of this type of joint, characterized by the amount of tolerance (space) between the two parts. The shrink fitting process is used for the interference fit type joint.
