Italian term or phrase: insegnante di sostegno
I know this was always the "remedial teacher" and that's what I find in Garzanti, but I have a feeling it may have been replaced with "special needs teacher" - Google gives a lot more hits for special needs. Would it no longer be "politically correct" to use "remedial teacher"?

(learning) support teacher
Explanation:
I do a lot of interpreting in UK primary schools for learning support teachers and Italian children with special needs, so this could be the term you're looking for.

The Learning support teacher withdraws students from mainstream classes on a temporary basis - work is done on areas of specific learning difficulties in skill areas of reading, writing, spelling, language and Mathematics. Withdraw takes place in all year groups - 1st to 6th.

Explanation:
I worked as interpreter for delegations coming from Australia, UK and USA to visit Italian preschools and Infant toddler centers and they preferred talking about *special needs teachers* when referring to insegnante di sostegno. HTH

auxiliary teacher for special needs pupils

Explanation:
Have found this definition in an Italian website:
"L'insegnante di sostegno assiste, all'interno della scuola, studenti con difficoltà di apprendimento legate a problemi fisici, sensoriali, cognitivi o comportamentali..."
www.professioni.info/provol/688.htm
I am adding an example of the usage of the term "auxiliary teacher":
"Auxiliary teacher (for special needs pupils). 3. Gorizia province. Didactic Directorate of Gorica."
