I know this was always the "remedial teacher" and that's what I find in Garzanti, but I have a feeling it may have been replaced with "special needs teacher" - Google gives a lot more hits for special needs. Would it no longer be "politically correct" to use "remedial teacher"?

I do a lot of interpreting in UK primary schools for learning support teachers and Italian children with special needs, so this could be the term you're looking for.

The Learning support teacher withdraws students from mainstream classes on a temporary basis - work is done on areas of specific learning difficulties in skill areas of reading, writing, spelling, language and Mathematics. Withdraw takes place in all year groups - 1st to 6th.
