I'm not sure which is the legal difference for these two categories of companies... Would the first one be "A company that is part of a corporation" and the second one "a publicly traded company"? Thanks for your help!

if company B is a \'partecipata\' of A, A has a significant stake in it (usually between 20-50%), but not enough to have operational control. If B is a subsidiary, then A usually has a stake of over 50% and exercises control over management. Accounting treatment of the two kinds is very different.

My understanding is as follows Company A
Company B
Company C

impresa del gruppo: typically when a company is part of the group of companies, it is referred to as "fully owned subsidiary". For example, Company B is a fully owned subsidiary of Company A.

impresa partecipata: this means that a given company owns some shares of another company. The percentage dictates whether it is a controlling interest or not. For example, Company A's interest in company C
