Now, it all depends on your context. When I hear/read the word "prosciutto" in English I think about Parma ham (prosciutto crudo), which is a specific type of ham. Is this the case with this "prosciuttificio"?
"PROSCIUTTO comes from the Italian "prosciugare" meaning 'to dry out' and 'drying out' is essentially how prosciutto is made."
Umberto: perché "ham" non va bene per indicare il prosciutto italiano? "Prosciutto San Daniele" is surely a PDO, but it is a type of ham anyway... o no? Sarò poco nazionalista?...
Anyway, the word "prosciutto", as Umberto says, though not an everyday word, is now quite familiar to English speakers, especially to those who love Italian food (and there are many of them in the UK!)

: Giusto! Se si tratta di prosciutto italiano ***ham*** non va bene. ***Prosciutto factory*** salva la specificità del prodotto e poi è termine sempre più conosciuto. Si vedano anche i siti UK dove è in uso ***prosciutto factory***
