Someone is explaining to the young guy a dream they had. Up to this point a door-to-door salesman has called at the person's door, and he has let him in:

“....Gli dico che potrei anche vendergliela, ma poi? La prospettiva di bruciare per l’eternità non mi sembra il massimo. Non stia a credere, mi fa, da noi non si sta così male come dicono. E poi lei, in cambio, potrebbe chiedere qualsiasi cosa. Insomma, cerca di convincermi che è uno scambio equo....”

hmmm ... lets' see how it works out:
"Don't believe it", so he says, "we're not as badly off here as they say".
But you can leave the "so" out and not lose anything.
