Italian term or phrase: i.r. ingegnere circolare
I'm translating an article about a number of historic buildings in the Trentino dating from the beginning of the 19th century. This mentions a number of times a certain Giuseppe Maria Ducati, who is given the title of "i.r. ingegnere circolare". Can anyone help me with the meaning of "i.r." and "circolare" in this context? Many thanks.

Explanation:
I tried a lot; this is the best rendering I could have. I am not sure of circular engineer.
