Italian term or phrase: il segno si deve fare tagliente
The previous sentence has described how the artist has managed to project her own experience and sensitivty in the work, rather than allowing her word to enhance the truth of this. I am confused with the subject/object relations from this point onward, i.e. does "si deve fare tagliente" describe "il segno" or the following phrase "il colore materico ....etc".

"E la sua ricerca è proseguita negli anni fino a maturare la consapevolezza che, per raggiungere ciò, il segno si deve fare tagliente, il colore materico e il gesto espressivo; quest’ultimo è sì guidato, ma contemporaneamente fortemente spontaneo e rivelatore di un’interiorità che si dispiega tramite segni ampi, intensi e penetranti.
