Italian term or phrase: programmi d'ufficio
A text about updating computing facilities. The broader context is "le performance dei programmi d’ufficio dipendevano fortemente dalle capacità delle macchine".
We are talking researchers here, so these are not "office programs" (with or without capital O!). I tend to think 'standard software packages' but that might imply 'standard as opposed to customized'. Common(ly used) software packages ? Any help much appreciated (and don't jump on me for my technophobia please :-)

software applications

Explanation:
the fact there is mention of machine speed I would tend to think it is about application software

in-house software

Explanation:
"d'ufficio" can mean "in-house" (besides its other legal meanings which can be discounted in this context, I would say).
If we are talking about researchers, it's probably quite likely that they have had to develop their own software for their own very special purposes (as it may not have been economic for commercial software companies to do so if the market is very narrow).
HTH :).
