Italian term or phrase: termine di basso livello
I need some advice for the term "termine di basso livello".

The context is:
Gli eventi avversi oculari osservati con maggiore frequenza sono stati "degenerazione maculare" (termine di basso livello: distacco sieroso della macula) (n=13), "distacco della retina" (n=12) e "visione offuscata" (n=8).

A lot of information is often provided in scientific contexts in technical language. Sometimes, they provide terms or explanations or titles in "layperson's language", which is more simple and easier to understand for non-scientists.
I think this term might be saying this: i.e. layperson term.
However, I think that "macular degeneration" would be the lay term whereas "serous macular detachment" would be the technical term, so this has thrown me off.

Has anyone come across this term in a scientific clinical trial context? Do you think it means "lay term" or can anyone help me with an alternative translation?

Thank you in advance.
