Not "affordable housing": "affordable housing" is a a very specific expression, in current use today but only in the UK, that refers to a particular type of residential accommodation, being built for sale in the UK. I do not believe that "affordable housing" would be the appropriate term to use in your document.

In the end, with the customer we agreed to use "medium level" for "residenziali" and "lower level" for "economiche"

What I was trying really to point out was that, housing, law and culture in different countries can be radically different in many ways. Throughout my childhood in England I can only remember one person who lived in flat, while in over 30 years of life in Italy I can hardly remember anybody who doesn't. To expect land registry classifications to coincide is well... .

I'm sure it is delightful Tom, but apart from the fact that we didn't go to primary school together, where do you go to play?
BTW after over 30 years in an Italian flat I now have a garden, which is paradise.
Back on topic, maybe the best way to translate would be "the Italian land registry classification'economic dwellings'", ie translate literally in inverted commas and explain somewhere that it is an official Italian classification, which one would hardly expect to appear identically in another country.

E perché dovrebbe esistere un simile livello di burocrazia in altri paesi? :-) I've never heard of anything similar in UK and a quick Google finds nothing. You have council housing, terraced, semis and detached. Oh and funny people who live in flats. I remember one school friend who lived in a flat (only one). Terrible, no garden to play in and a lift to get outside.

io sono cresciuta in una A3 ed erano 100 metri quadri e due balconi in un quartiere periferico ma decente. DOvrebbe esistere una classificazione ufficiale se ci specifichi se parli di case inglesi o statunitensi.

Le classificazioni in Italia sono: A2, A3 economica (decentissima) A 10 ufficio, C2 magazzino, ecc. ecc. sicuramente ci sono delle tabelle comparative per i due paesi.
