Qui peut me dire comment je pourrais traduire "fare la calza" dans ce contexte.
Faceva la calza, non nel senso di lavorare a maglia, ma proprio in senso stretto. A quei tempi le giovani donne che potevano permetterselo indossavano calze di seta o quelle, allora altrettanto costose, di nylon.
J'avais traduit par "faisait des bas" mais l'auteur me dit qu'en italien ça a un sens un peu négatif et veut aussi dire aussi s'occuper des taches réservées aux femmes. Je ne sais pas si nous avons une expression équivalente en français et qui justifierai que je garde "in senso stretto", sinon ce passage ne veut plus rien dire.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

Et cela est envisagé comme péjoratif : on renvoie souvent les femmes à leurs tâches ménagères classiques : "occupe-toi de ta cuisine", "va donc repriser tes chaussettes", etc.
Pour garder l'image, cela pourrait donner : "elle reprisait des chaussettes, mais pas au sens propre, puisque les jeunes femmes de cette époque qui pouvaient se le permettre portaient des bas....etc"
