Architecture
Italian term or phrase: le pietre e le catene
I was wondering if "le catene" can mean something other than "chains" in an architectural sense because I have the following phrase to translate but I find the idea of having "stones and chains" together rather strange.

"le pietre e le catene che da sempre rendono le strutture rigide."

If anyone could clarify its meaning here, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Explanation:
La catena è un elemento strutturale di un materiale resistente a trazione. È il sistema di consolidamento più semplice ed antico che ancora oggi risulta essere il migliore, ha notevoli vantaggi e la sua installazione può essere reversibile.
