"Well," I said to him. "Egidio, but why isn't he/she calling her from the phone booth?"

If the formal third person "lei" form is being used to address Egidio:

"Well," I said to him. "Egidio, but why aren't you calling her from the phone booth?"

You could probably also put "there" but I prefer "well" -- sounds more conversational.
