Non so bene come rendere la frase in inglese, ma ritengo che sia un susseguirsi di mucchi (colline) di macerie che va pensare al susseguirsi delle arcate di un portico.

Un'arcata è anche una volta.

Pensa ad una strada bombardata di un film di guerra.

E' un susseguirsi di colline (arcuate)
di macerie!
