Science - Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) / speciazione - speciation

Sympatric speciation/Catastrophic speciation

Explanation:
Sympatric speciation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A speciation in which new species evolve from a single ancestral species while inhabiting the same geographic region. In evolutionary biology and biogeography, sympatric and sympatry are terms referring to organisms whose ranges overlap or are even identical, so that they occur together at least in some places. If these organisms are closely related (e.g. sister species), such a distribution may be the result of sympatric speciation.

Catastrophic speciation: rapid speciation occurs, leading to genetic isolation with little or no morphological differentiation, but without polyploidy. All due to unknown conditions: mutators; environmental stress; all of which cause drastic chromosomal rearrangements.

Third, Raven's work on catastrophic speciation identified the importance of chromosomal rearrangements in the evolution of Clarkia Pursh and the ability of new species to inhabit different environments. Current work in Brassica L. has shown that phenotypic changes contributing to speciation events can arise from relatively few chromosomal rearrangements.

The latter is an example of catastrophic sympatric speciation.
