Italian to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering / Restoration of canal banks (Venice)
Italian term or phrase:palancolato/a
"Verifica sperimentale delle prestazioni di tenuta idraulica dei palacolati a protezione delle sponde"
"...Sarà eseguita una verifica per ogni tipologia di giunto presente lungo il marginamento, intendendosi come "giunto" il collegamento realizzato tra palancola e palancola durante la loro messa in opera e non quelli realizzati in stabilimento".
Question: I have found "footbridge" or "sheet piling" in my dictionary as a translation for palancolata, however I don't see how footbridge can protect the banks of the canal and I don't know what sheet piling is. I am envisaging a sort of wooden walkway on pilings (boardwalk?) to stop the banks from gradually crumbling into the water as people (or vehicles) pass along them. Can anyone suggest what might be meant here and how I could translate "palancolata" in this context? Many thanks
Explanation: you can see a picture of this on: www.fernald.gov/VImages/photoTour/2002 .
The Hoepli technical dictionary has: palancola = sheet pile.
palancolata: sheet piling. Example: lo stabilimento produrra una serie completa di palancolate = the mill will turn out a full range of sheet piling.
The picture shows what sheet piling means.
