I pasti principali, per rapidi che siano, si consumano ancora prevalentemente in casa, anche se, da questo punto di vista, sono ancora vistose le differenze regionali. Infatti nell'Italia centro-meridionale permane la scansione tradizionale che privilegia il pranzo di mezzogiorno come pasto completo, costituito da più portate, in cui a un "primo (piatto)", generalmente pasta, fa seguito un "secondo", a base di carne o pesce, e un "contorno" di verdura e frutta, mentre la cena rimane un pasto più leggero, in cui il primo è spesso costituito da una minestra in brodo, oppure viene eliminato, e il secondo alterna la carne ai formaggi o agli affettati. Nell'Italia settentrionale, invece, soprattutto per quanto riguarda studenti e impiegati, il pranzo di mezzogiorno viene spesso consumato fuori casa, ed è un pasto leggero, spesso ridotto a un panino o a un "piatto pronto" consumato al bar. La cena invece assume il ruolo di pranzo principale, non solo per quanto riguarda l'articolazione delle portate, ma anche come momento di riaggregazione e di confronto familiare.
