È la cellula fertile che contiene le spore (di solito 4 oppure 8 spore; dette propriamente ascospore per distinguerle dalle basidiospore tipiche dei Basidiomiceti) e che caratterizza gli Ascomiceti (Divisione Ascomycota). È la cellula corrispettiva del basidio che caratterizza i Basidiomiceti (Divisione Basidiomycota). A differenza del basidio che porta le spore mature all’esterno, l’asco protegge le spore al suo interno per poi farle fuoriuscire tramite vari meccanismi.



Gli aschi nei casi più comuni sono formati da una sorta di tubetto o baccello all’interno del quale maturano le spore. A maturazione avvenuta, le spore vengono espulse tramite un sistema dinamico-idraulico (espulsione) attraverso la sommità dell’asco che può presentarsi munita o meno di opercolo.
