In my opinion "pattern" is better in English than "network". "Settlement" is intentionally in the singular,

"maglia" implies that the settlements were built according to a grid, which is just possible if the grid was a Roman centuriation. But even if this were the case it is unlikely that much of the Roman grid would remain strong today.
