Tra queste ultime va annoverata ad esempio la popolazione dei Celti, che penetra nella pianura Padana in due successive ondate, nel VI e nel IV secolo a.C., occupando praticamente l’intera area settentrionale e sovrapponendosi ai Liguri (fino ad assorbirli quasi completamente, fondendosi con essi e formando raggruppamenti chiamati Celtoliguri) e in parte anche ai nuclei etruschi che si trovavano a Nord dell’Appennino tosco-emiliano. Sempre nell’Italia settentrionale troviamo stanziati inoltre i Veneti e i Reti, mentre nel Sud e Centro-sud troviamo popolazioni illiriche, come gli Iapigi e i Messapi. Le coste della Sicilia e della Sardegna, infine, erano state colonizzate dai Cartaginesi, di stirpe fenicia.

Concerning the similarities between Salentine Apulian and Romanian, a possible link may be the ancient Messapii and Iapigii, peoples that inhabited on both sides of the Adriatic Sea, though mainly in Italy.
