Giungono sul posto e dopo dieci minuti di riposo afferrano chi la mazza e chi il pistoletto, chi il badile e chi la gravina, chi il palanchino e chi la piccozza od il martello ed incomincia il ritmo dei colpi demolitori sulla roccia e la rimozione dei macigni più ostinati

This is World War One related and it cannot be a weapon. Any ideas?

Evidently the man with a sledgehammer and the one with a "pistoletto" work together to drill holes in the rock.

Forgot it! The next step would probably be to stick some explosive into the holes to demolish the hardest rock into smaller pieces, which the rest of the team will manage with different tools.
