Law/Patents
Italian term or phrase: avvocatura generale dello stato
Most Italian-English dictionsaries give "law officers". This, however, is British usage. I need an equivalent term in American English.

Explanation:
"General Prosecutor of the State" is the term used to translate "Avvocatura generale dello stato" in a text of the U.S. Sending State Office for Italy (see link below). However, I am not sure it's an "official" translation.

I'll go with this one. It is given that any reference to "state" in Europe refers the national government (not for your sugguestion). Although, as you say, this may not be official, at least I will be in good company.
Thanks.

Explanation:
I 've found: Avvocato generale = Advocate-General
...generale dello Stato = State public
So it could be: State public advocate or something similar.
Perhaps Heatcliff could be more precise than I am.
Hope this helps

"Office of the District Attorney"

Explanation:
Grazie, Giovanna! -- You're both well along the right track. Lawyers who work for the government are, essentially by definition, the advocates of the state or the people in cases against accused lawbreakers.

So, unless they are working as public defenders (that is, lawyers who are appointed by the government to represent defendants, usually in criminal cases, who can't afford to hire their own attorneys), the lawyers who represent the government (at any level) are known as "prosecuting attorneys" ("avvocati dello stato") or "assistant district attorneys," and the organization they work for is the "avvocatura generale dello stato," i.e., the Office of the Public Prosecutor or, as it's more commonly known in the U.S., the Office of the District Attorney.

State Attorneys Office

Explanation:
The use of the term "District Attorney" or similar can be misleading in that the Avvocatura Generale dello Stato is a national body and not a local one. In fact, the Avvocatura dello Stato is closest to the US Attorney General or US Solicitor General in that its role is to represent the Government, Italian State or public bodies in proceedings before Italian courts. The DA is closer to the Italian concept of Pubblico Ministero in as much as it carries out a prosecutory function.

The General Attorney's Office.

Explanation:
I think that "state" here means the "nation".
