As a validation to Cedric's answer, I've now found this bilingual text from a reliable source (lens manufacturer ZEISS),

'La produzione della lente minerale inizia con uno sbozzo. I materiali naturali grezzi (come il quarzo, il carbonato di potassio, la soda) sono fusi in una mistura di vetro a 1400/1500 gradi Celsius. Successivamente, sono iniettati automaticamente in una pressa che porta ad ottenere un blocco di vetro rotondo spesso 3 cm che ha superficie anteriore e una posteriore opaca e grezza – il cosiddetto sbozzo. È una sorta di diamante non tagliato.'
