Italian to English translations [PRO]
Medical
Italian term or phrase: 1a Facoltà di Medicina / 3a Medicina Interna / Aiuto / Assistente
In a listing of investigators in an Italian protocol, their departments and titles are at times given as:

Aiuto
Assistente
Primario

Cathedra
2a Facoltà di Medicina
3a Medicina Interna

Can anyone help with the titles Aiuto, Assistente, Primario ...
and with the 2a, 3a as they appear in Facoltà di Medicina and the Internal Medicine.

Explanation:
As far as the "1a e 3rd facoltà...", some cities have more than one university that teaches medicine. Where I come from (Naples), we have two. They are called "Prima facoltà di medicina" and "Seconda facoltà di medicina". These are now their "proper names" and as such I would not translated them. It's like MIT: you would not translate it as "istituto della tecnologia del Massachusetts"!

As far as "primario" generally it's the "chief" (of a hospital dept.). "Aiuto" can be "aide". Unfortunately a lot of these terms have no precise corrispondents (and I don't know enough about hospital hierarchy)!

Buon lavoro,

Aiuto= assistant professor, or, depending of context,

Explanation:
could be simply "Aid" (which is not a University affiliation).
Assistente= Associate Professor of Medicine
Primario= Professor of Medicine

1a. Facoltá di Medicina= 1st School of Medicine
3a Medicina Interna= 3rd Internal Medicine
The concept of "cathedra" exists in both Italian and Spanish, but not here in US Universities.

Good luck
Elena
