Yep - I think Alfredo's right - there was one instance of "semimevente" in the text followed by numerous instances of "semovente" (I hadn't gotten that far yet) so it is clearly a typo. Thanks for claryfing the meaning for me!

agree  Alfredo Tutino: just "semovente and "self-propelled, I'd say - a syllabe ("mi") seems to have been added in the question line by mistake. The "maiali" of WWII were also called "siluri a lenta corsa" - "Low Speed Torpedo" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_torpedo
