Italian to English translations [Non-PRO]
Military / Defense / military contract
Italian term or phrase: bombe illuminanti
The phrase is "bombe illiuminanti per fucili Beretta 70/90 cal. 5,56mm."
I understand what the rifles are, but am having trouble what the "bombe" are and how they are related to the rifles.

star shell

Explanation:

http://www.firstworldwar.com/atoz/starshell.htm

A "star shell" was a form of artillery used a means of illuminating the battlefield during the hours of darkness, and also as a means of passing signals.
When fired the star shell, which contained a fuse, would burst while at a given height igniting a magnesium flare which burned while the shell, which also contained a parachute, gradually fell to earth

illuminating bombs

Explanation:
I found the Italian in "Direttiva 2004/57/CE 24 aprile 2004" regulating the sale of these things and looked up the English EU version of the Directive. Just to what extent we can trust the Brussesl translators is another question, however these "flares" are of different types. In fact flares are under a different category translated as "Dispositivi illuminanti"

Ammunition, illuminating with or without burster, expelling charge or propelling charge Ammunition designed to produce a single source of intense light for lighting up an area. The term includes illuminating cartridges, grenades and projectiles; and **illuminating and target identification bombs**.

Tracer cartridges are totally different things. I know exactly what they are, they were first used in World War I if I remember correctly. When you fire a bullet in a real battle you have absolutely know idea where they go exactly. In Italian they are "Traccianti per munizioni Oggetti sigillati contenenti materie pirotecniche e concepiti per seguire la traiettoria di un proiettile." There are chemicals in a small cartridge which travels with the bulled. The chemicals burn and you can see the trajectory of the bullet as it travels.

If you examine my documents carefully, you will see that they are pretty exhaustive.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Jim, Thanks for the documentation, very helpful! I actually got a response from a different site, and it is "tracer cartridges." Liz
