Le opere art-rock sono spesso caratterizzate da liriche ambiziose e sperimentazione melodica o ritmica. In un certo senso, l'espressione art-rock può essere considerata così vaga da abbracciare, potenzialmente, quasi tutti gli album rock: si pensi per esempio alla musica d'ambiente di Brian Eno, alla sperimentazione elettronica di gruppi del movimento krautrock come i Kraftwerk, alle divagazioni etniche di Peter Gabriel, al jazz rock di Joni Mitchell o al pop raffinatissimo degli Slapp Happy o degli Henry Cow; e via dicendo. Tuttavia, i critici (e i fan) usano questa espressione, in genere, per distinguere determinati autori e opere da quella che viene talvolta definita, in modo non meno vago, musica commerciale; ovvero musica che non cerca di andare oltre i canoni standard della musica pop, ma anzi si tiene accuratamente dentro quei confini, allo scopo di risultare "rassicurante" o "orecchiabile" al grande pubblico. In questa visione, un sinonimo di significato molto più evidente per "art-rock" potrebbe essere "rock serio" o "rock impegnato" (senza dare a quest'ultimo termine connotazioni legate all'impegno politico). In alcuni casi l'espressione è quasi sovrapposta, in significato, a quella di rock alternativo (alternative rock). |
