È inoltre significativo che Petrarca prestasse attenzione a generi meno elevati ma più attuali e diffusi: il Canzoniere attesta infatti sette esemplari di un genere popolare come la ballata (dal poeta stesso definita plebeia cantio, cioè "canzone popolare") e quattro esemplari di un genere come il madrigale, apparso di recente e legato al rinnovamento della musica polifonica (cioè a più voci) presso le corti settentrionali. Di particolare interesse è che uno di essi, il madrigale 52, oltre a riprendere e nobilitare le caratteristiche del genere (estrema brevità, andamento narrativo, ambientazione pastorale, chiusa a effetto), sia giunto sino a noi con le note di cui lo rivestì il musico Jacopo da Bologna, attivo presso le corti dell’epoca.
