"La percezione della degradazione del suolo e dell'isola stessa, intensamente e pensantamente utilizzati e rimaneggiati dall'uomo lungo la storia lontana e presente, trasmette il messaggio di trovarci in un ambiente estremo".
Instinctively, I would use some sort of strong word to translate this.. but I need to find a term that reflects the original yet does not depict this island as totally wasted away or ruined, because it is not... and describing it in that way would totally clash with everything else that is said in the chapter about it. In fact, I really find this sentence out of context, so I am trying to make the translation fit...

Io non credo qui si tratti di un giudizio sullo stato "estetico-ambientale" del territorio. Degradazione del suolo è un concetto di natura geologica, che inevitabilmente comporta anche l'idea di "degrado". Ma non è il degrado il cuore della questione

La degradazione del suolo è un processo degenerativo e irreversibile, spesso causato dall'uomo o dalle sue attività, che si risolve nella sua totale scomparsa o in una perdita della sua fertilità sotto l'aspetto fisico-meccanico, chimico e biologico. A causa dei tempi lunghi richiesti dalla pedogenesi, la degradazione del suolo rientra a tutti gli effetti nel fenomeno più vasto del degrado ambientale.

Chiaramente l'attività umana produsse effetti diversi in funzione della qualità dell'ambiente. In questo contesto, le aree più suscettibili alla degradazione erano quelle con un clima più arido e suoli poveri, fortemente alterati, spesso estremamente soggetti ad erosione. Le pianure con suoli mal drenati raramente vennero usate perché soggette al ristagno delle acque.

E' nei primi anni ottanta che in Sardegna nasce l’idea di costruire un progetto di ricerca
sui problemi legati alla degradazione del territorio (Land Degradation), per individuare i processi che conducono alla desertificazione e per indicare i mezzi atti a mitigarla. L’obiettivo
era quello di utilizzare l’isola come target area che avesse una valenza di area vasta (Europa del sud)
