Italian term or phrase: riconoscimento giuridico
Alcuni, dopo aver ottenuto nel ’49 il riconoscimento giuridico che li equiparava ai profughi e con la prospettiva del ricongiungimento famigliare, decisero di stabilirsi definitivamente in territorio britannico.

Explanation:
I agree with Paola's "granted refugee status" but I think you also require that part stating "riconoscimento giuridico" as it indicates that they were accorded the equivalent of refugee status by a court decision. I interpret this as being something out of the ordinary i.e. they were not granted automatic refugee status.
Unfortunately, as we don't know who you're talking about, it's difficult to offer more help.
Also "recognizance" is not the correct expression in this context. Collins says "a bond entered into before a court or magistrate by which a person binds himslef to do a specified act".
When "recognizance" is required you will not need to state "legal" as it is inherent in the word itself.
