pietra serena
Explanation:
Esistono due tipi di Pietra serena.
la prima è un tipo di arenaria facilmente sfaldabile e quindi un tipo di "sandstone";
ma la seconda, quella utilizzata in scultura, soprattutto peeer sbalzi e intagli, è molto più dura della prima e non è un tipo di arenaria.
il secondo tipo, rimane "PIETRA SERENA " anche in Inglese.

sandstone

Explanation:
Hi
Logos dictionary gives sandstone. But said dictionary often has to be taken with bucketloads of salt.

Suggestion:

Explanation:
Hi - because "sereno" can mean "clear" in the sense of weather or the sky, is it possible that this term refers to a precious stone that is clear, even diamond-like in transparency, or clear-blue? If so, maybe you can render the translation with «pietra di blu trasparente», or «pietra trasparente di blu (or d'azzurro)», etc.

Good luck - Gary. :-)

Pietra serena sandstone

Explanation:
I agree with DSmith:

"There were two types of pietra macigno: pietra serena and pietra bigia, sandstones composed of quartz, silicates and mica, with shiny flakes. Pietra serena is a light sky blue in color" - see reference

pietra serena

Explanation:
When I was translating "Tuscany Interiors" for Taschen a couple of years ago, I left the Italian name of this stone in the English version.
It is, as some of the other contributors have pointed out, a kind of local sandstone.

pietra serena

Explanation:
I would certainly use "pietra serena" in italics and add a footnote explaining its unique characteristics. Architects will know what it is.

SEE:
The partners include the district council of Firenzuola and eight private entrepreneurs working in the sector of “pietra serena”, a local grey stone often used in the past by Italian Renaissance artists but today confined to paving historic centres.

Up until a few decades ago the work of the stone-cutters was carried out using a local material, pietra serena, a compact sandstone which was extracted from quarries scattered throughout the area.

(Pietra Serena is a fine-grained dark gray limestone)

a local sandstone that is steel-gray in color

1 day 20 hrs
"pietra serena"

Explanation:
its is a type of very hard gray/blue sandstone typically used around tuscany and in Florence were I am from. I would keep it in Italian and in Italilics. It would be too generic if you used the term sandstone and would not give justice to "pietra serena".

Buon lavoro,
Elena
