it has got to see with the smell of some vintages, (vinegar,stuffy and tar!)
for example the Syrah vintage (french wintages) has a tar smell
to check go to yahoo.fr enter goudron et vin the 4th or fifth review deals with these smells
we, French people use the word "goudron" and france is supposed famous for its wine tradition
guess you mustn't translate as surprising as it may seem
