I think you\'re right about the nature of these \"informative roles\". It would help to know who they were. Counter-espionage would only work if they were originally spying for the other side.

Another possibility is simply \"collaborate by providing information\", although it sounds as if something more active was required, so perhaps \"acting as informers\" would be better.
