Carentino è un paese in Piemonte, quindi la moneta potrebbe derivare da lì.
Leggendo questo sito pare però che i "Carentines" anticamente fossero anche gli abitanti di un'altra città (penso in Abruzzo visto che si parla anche di Ortona e di Teatines, cioè abitanti di Chieti).

Explanation:
è solo una proposta, ma da quello che ho potuto vedere navignado questo termine, riferito al denaro, si trova in pochissimi "matchs" e solo in siti in italiano antico ma soprattutto in latino....
la via meno complicata e forse più chiara è lasciarlo così e mettere un bellissimo N.d.T...
